Advanced Environmental Dust Control Solution
EnviroKleen® is the world's first Synthetic Organic Dust Control® product. Created in our laboratory and unique to the industry, EnviroKleen’s binder system captures dust and fines and keeps them locked into the surface, preventing fugitive dust and fines from escaping.
EnviroKleen’s synthetic fluid and polymeric binder interlocks and durably binds surface aggregate and fines together through both cohesive and adhesive mechanisms. As fines are generated over time from heavy traffic, they are captured, preventing them from escaping as dust.
A “Kleen”-er Solution for Dusty Environments
EnviroKleen® is a patented, two-part system designed for the delivery of high-performance dust control. The system consists of a custom-engineered synthetic carrier fluid and the KleenBinder® viscoelastic polymer binder.
The synthetic carrier fluid is engineered on a micro-scale to optimize EnviroKleen’s ability to penetrate unpaved surfaces and permeate deep into individual aggregate and soil particles. This unique design ensures that EnviroKleen® distributes its powerful KleenBinder binder system evenly throughout the unpaved surface and coats all aggregate and soil particles to a depth of 2 – 3 inches.
From a performance standpoint, the KleenBinder ® properties are truly stunning. KleenBinder is specifically designed to have excellent adhesion properties and an extremely high viscosity. The polymeric binder behaves as both a viscous fluid and as an elastic solid. This phenomenon is made possible because the KleenBinder is comprised of very large and highly branched polymer molecules. These branches create a network of fiber-like tentacles that extensively intertwine and entangle between soil and aggregate particles, resulting in a strongly bound matrix.
As EnviroKleen® penetrates the surface, the carrier fluid permeates into microscopic pores in aggregate and soil particles but the KleenBinder intertwines and becomes entangled on the exterior surface of each particle. This phenomenon causes a high concentration of KleenBinder to accumulate on the particle surfaces, which activates the polymer design features. The large molecular weight and high viscosity of the binder create powerful adhesive and cohesive forces that lock soil particles together.
An additional benefit to the KleenBinder system is that it cannot be displaced by water because the large, high molecular weight molecules adhere to soil particles and are too large to be displaced or dislodged. The KleenBinder system is essential to EnviroKleen®, and it plays a critical role in its performance and extending the longevity of the surface.
PERFORMANCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATIONS
In addition to third party testing, six agencies evaluated and either approved or certified EnviroKleen® for use in their perspective jurisdictions. Each of these groups had one common incentive in the evaluation of dust suppressants – to protect the environment. As we all know, fugitive emissions are in the least a nuisance, and at the extreme an immediate or chronic hazard to both the environment and human health. The United States and Canada have no federal regulations on what chemical dust suppressants can contain. We as consumers must rely on understanding far reaching air and water quality standards and trust that the suppliers we select are forthcoming in their product ingredients. These agencies felt it necessary to evaluate chemical dust suppressants on an even playing field.
Three of the agencies; US EPA, PA SCC and USGS evaluated both environmental impact as well as performance of dust suppressants. The other three, WA DoE, WV DEP and Quebec BNQ evaluated and certified products solely based on environmental impact. Midwest worked closely with the US EPA on the development of their protocol, and we are currently a member of the Product and Process working group with the PA program. Midwest also worked closely with the USGS for many years on their multi-phase project and the study of the impact of chemical dust suppressants on the environment. The USGS study is particularly significant as it studied suppressants from the lab to the field - the first program of its kind. We are proud that EnviroKleen® was selected to be part of the study from beginning to end.

US EPA Environmental Technology Verification test data verifies that EnviroKleen® is safe for people and the environment as well as effective in suppressing PM10 and PM2.5 levels. No other synthetic fluids have achieved this designation.
EnviroKleen® holds the Bureau de normalisation de Quebec (BNQ) Certification. A rigorous and impartial third-party provider of international environmental standards, the BNQ provides a transparent and uniform process: each product is evaluated according to eight stringent parameters that evaluate its ecotoxicological impact.

The non-corrosive properties of EnviroKleen® has been certified by Boeing Document D6-17487, the most stringent corrosion standard in the United States.

THE KLEENBINDER SYSTEM CAPTURES FINES
Once applied, EnviroKleen® rapidly penetrates an unpaved surface, where the KleenBinder’s very large and highly branched polymer molecules intertwine and become entangled on the exterior surface of each particle - creating a network of connections between all their neighbors. This entanglement between the molecules creates the viscoelastic properties of the binder because the interaction between the molecules is very strong and restricts them from moving freely. As branches of adjacent molecules catch on each other the molecules can flex, but their movement and ability to flow becomes restricted.
FINES ARE LOCKED INTO THE SURFACE
The KleenBinder system is specifically designed to have both an ultra-high molecular weight and an extensive amount of branching on each molecule. The purpose of these features is to impart an extremely high viscosity and excellent adhesion properties to the polymer. On a microscopic scale, the high molecular weight reduces the ability for molecules to move past each other, which causes an increase in cohesive force.
The large molecular weight and high viscosity of the binder create powerful adhesive (a powerful attracting force between different kinds of molecules) and cohesive (with the same types of molecules) forces that lock soil particles together.
DUST IS TRAPPED
Since fugitive dust can’t escape, it will not enter the surrounding environment of the treated area.
